i'm back on the coffee house scene now that i'm studying for my bc exam. this evening i spent a couple hours at the gryphon cafe in wayne, following an appointment with janet at the wedding shoppe, who hemmed my bridesmaid dress for k.'s wedding before heading out to alter an honorary ribbon for gorbachev. so anyway, gryphon is located next to the wayne movie theatre, where lenya and i saw the 10th anniversary screening of dirty dancing in 1997. it's definitely more classy than slouchy, but maintains a relaxed neighborhood vibe. yellow walls, colorful paintings, wood tables and chairs, barely noticeable background music, middle-aged locals quietly discussing politics, complimentary filtered water and a wicked expensive menu of your usual coffee drinks and tea, some sandwiches (a couple sounded potentially vegan), salads and scrumptious-looking pastries (not vegan). there seemed to be an upstairs area too with some couches and a giant tele, but i didn't have a good look around. overall, gryphon provided a pleasant space for a very productive study session, but next time i want an oregon soy chai, i think i'll save myself $4.50 and make it at home.
