after a gorgeous outing to longwood gardens a couple weeks ago, lenya and i decided to take ourselves out to dinner at margaret kuo's in media. let me just say straight away - this was some of the best chinese food i've had. i usually don't write reviews if more than a week has passed since i visited the restaurant, but my memory of kuo's delectable offerings is quite clear. to whet our appetites, lenny and i nibbled on salty cooked peanuts and lightly pickled cucumbers. both packed a wallop of concentrated flavor. next we got some drinks - a divine lychee martini for me and plum wine for len, along with a vegetable spring roll and scrumptious scallion pancakes:

the spring roll was simple and well-balanced, the pancakes were light, crispy and melt-in-your-mouth good. for our main course, we shared ma po tofu and a vegetable dish with lotus root, asparagus and a few other fresh veggies in a wonderful clear garlic sauce. the ma po was comprised of soft tofu cubes in an extremely salty and peppery sauce. we were pleased with the dish, though it's not something i would necessarily order again. we were surprised at the end of our meal that our total indulgences did not add up to more than $50, given the quality of the food, the cordial service and the classy decor. a great dining experience! here are some bonus pictures from longwood gardens:
