what a great surprise to find out that an entirely vegan restaurant has opened up since luca and i last visited the berkshires! "the dancing vegan" is a little take-out shack on a residential street in pittsfield that offers organic prepared dishes, salads, sandwiches, smoothies and baked goods made without any animal products or refined sugars. we stopped by on thursday after our visit to the mass moca and picked up a few things for dinner. luca got a combo of sesame noodles and waldorf salad with a generous slab of rosemary flatbread. the flatbread was unbelievable and both salads were tasty. i myself got a tempeh-"tuna" sandwich on sourdough bread with lettuce and tomato. i was extremely impressed with their "tuna." i have all but stopped eating processed soy meat substitutes, so it was really refreshing to find that this sort of mock dish can be made impressively well using tempeh. ("dancing vegan" uses homemade tempeh from vermont.) i think the excess of vegenaise that the server slathered on the bread was entirely too much, given that the "tuna" salad was already chock full of it, but that caveat aside, it was an excellent sandwich and enough for two meals. sticking salt and vinegar chips in it when i got home made it even better. we also got banana strawberry smoothies made with soy milk, coconut milk and agave - simple but delicious. i am very grateful to have an all vegan place to get food from when we come up here. maybe next time i'll try their tiramisu cake, when we don't have the world's best vegan cake already in our fridge.
